Chromium trichloride (chemical formula: CrCl3) is a commonly used mordant and catalyst, easy to delix, easy to sublimate, and easy to be oxidized by oxygen at high temperatures. There are two kinds: anhydrous and hexahydrate. The anhydrous chromium trichloride is an intensely luminous purple crystal that is almost insoluble in water. Chromium trichloride hexahydrate is a complex with three hydrated isomers: a purple, light green, and dark green solid. It is usually purchased in a dark green isochemicalbook structure. Chromium trichloride crystals contain CrCl6 octahedral units connected into layers, with helical dislocations in the structure and no metal-metal bonds. It is isomorphic with chromium triiodide. Anhydrous chromium trichloride is an important raw material in organometallic chemistry. Many organochromium compounds can be prepared from it, such as diphenylchromium which is structurally similar to ferrocene. Chromium trichloride is also the starting material for many chromium (III) complexes.
