TMPTGE (CAS 30499-70-8): What Happens When You Replace It with a Difunctional Diluent?
Sep 16, 2026
Trimethylolpropane triglycidyl ether (TMPTGE, CAS 30499-70-8) is a trifunctional epoxy diluent. Formulators sometimes ask whether it can be replaced by a difunctional diluent, such as neopentyl glycol diglycidyl ether (NGDE), to reduce cost. The question is reasonable. The answer is not a simple yes or no.
Both products lower viscosity. Both react into the epoxy network. But they do different things to the crosslink structure after cure. TMPTGE has three epoxy groups per molecule. NGDE has two. When NGDE reacts, it extends the chain between crosslink points. The network becomes looser. You get lower viscosity, but you also get lower crosslink density. In practice, that often shows up as a drop in glass transition temperature (Tg) and weaker solvent resistance.
TMPTGE behaves differently. Its three epoxy groups each participate in the cure. Instead of extending chains, it introduces additional branch points. The network becomes tighter, not looser. At the same viscosity reduction, you typically end up with a higher crosslink density than you would with a difunctional diluent.
Formulators who try the swap sometimes notice the difference only after testing. The cured part may feel softer, or it may fail a solvent rub test it used to pass. Increasing the curing agent can partially compensate, but it changes the balance of the system and can introduce side effects, such as unreacted amine that affects aging.
Difunctional diluents are not inherently worse. They serve a purpose. If your priority is maximum viscosity reduction at the lowest cost, a monofunctional diluent may be even more efficient. The choice depends on what you are willing to trade. TMPTGE is for situations where you want the viscosity drop without giving up too much network density.
Alfa Chemical manufactures TMPTGE (CAS 30499-70-8) in Zhengzhou, China, at ≥99% purity with an epoxy equivalent weight (EEW) of 138–154 g/eq. Every lot ships with a batch-specific COA and SDS.
