It is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water and acetone. 4-Iodobenzonitrile can be prepared by transfer of nitrile to iodide. The product has been used as a synthetic intermediate for pharmaceuticals, including the antibiotic erythromycin. It also has been used in the synthesis of other compounds, such as phenylacetic acid and its derivatives, and aromatic amines.
